Ancient Fruit Promises New Hope For Health
Known as "The Queen of Fruits", the mangosteen (Garcinia Mangostana) is native to Thailand and South East Asia. Wherever the mangosteen tree grows, people
flock to it for its fruit that has a remarkable taste. More important than its taste, however, is that these people realized how this fruit kept them feeling well and aided in the healing of conditions such as dysentery,
infections, fevers and skin disorders. The natives of such countries as Thailand, Brazil, Argentina, and the Philippines have known for centuries the extraordinary health benefits of this prized fruit. In the last
150 years researchers and medical practitioners have studied and utilized its healing and protective properties. Its properties (xanthones) have been the focus of decades of scientific research.
Xanthones have been labeled "Perhaps the most important health discovery of the century." Xanthones are a biologically active group of plant compounds that
interact with each other and throughout the body. To date more than 200 xanthones have been identified in nature, about a third of these have been studied and over 40 (and still counting) have been identified in the rind or
pericarp of the mangosteen.
Perhaps more simply stated xanthones are supercharged anti-oxidants. As we know, antioxidants work on a cellular level and combat free radical damage. Science
has shown that each xanthone has a unique function in relation to how they work in the body. For example, a xanthone, garcinone E has been scientifically proven to be more efficient in killing cancer cells than the top 4 most
potent chemotherapy drugs. The Sloan- Kettering Cancer Center in New York, recently published an article site these findings: "Recent studies have revealed that xanthones from the fruit hulls exhibit antibacterial (3), antifungal (4), and anti-inflammatory (5) properties. Alpha-mangostin, a xanthone, inhibited growth of human leukemia HL60 cells (1) (6),
reduced the synthesis of prostaglandins (5), and prevented oxidative damage of LDL (7) in vitro. There is also preliminary evidence that alpha- and gamma-mangostins act as histamine and serotonin receptor blockers (8), and also inhibit HIV-1 protease (9). Garcinone E, another xanthone, exerts cytotoxic effects against human hepatocellular carcinoma cells (10). Extract from the pericarp of mangosteen has antiproliferative, antioxidative, and apoptotic effects against human breast cancer SKBR3 cells (11). No adverse effects have been reported with the use of mangosteen. "
